In its report on COVID-19, the German research community Leopoldina linked the intensive use of masks in public places to the relaxation of current restrictions on social and economic activities.
In a statement in the weekly magazine “Der Spiegel”, members of the leading German agency Leopoldina declared that they should cover their nose and mouth completely.
The scientist said: “The mouthpiece must become a new social standard”. The reopening of shops and the gradual opening of schools (at least for older students) depend largely on the provision of hygienic masks (FFP2) to the public (this is not possible due to supply problems).
The researchers said: “Only with adequate health protection can people return to normal life. (The masks) must be the latest fashion”. German Chancellor Angela Merkel said the Leopoldina report, which will be officially released, will play an important role in the debate on how to control the timing and manner of the spread of the virus pandemic.
The federal government and the “states” will meet to decide whether the restrictions should continue to be implemented, or whether the restrictions can begin to be relaxed to balance health standards and control damage in the economic sphere.
The German executive did not want to specify the standards to be taken into account when making this decision on Thursday. Besides saying that there will be several standards (including the development of new infections), he will also follow the experts’ recommendations. On Wednesday, the German government admitted that it had reached an agreement with a Chinese state-owned company to receive 40 million masks every week.
According to the Süddeutsche Zeitung, the agreement was sealed after the Prime Minister held a telephone conversation with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
